AeroPress Coffee Maker Review

I am a coffee fanatic in every sense of the word. I love everything about it, from brewing to drinking and even reading articles on how to make the perfect cup here at home or abroad. What’s more is that when my friends were telling me they’ve heard this new Aeropress coffee maker was great as opposed to other coffeemakers like French Presses, being someone who has always wanted an elegant way for making delicious cups of joe with little clean up (who doesn’t want less work?) What Are The Features Of The Aeropress?

Back in the day, when the internet was just a little place to hang-out, I used to be a Coffee Geek. To be more specific, when I was working as a young Barista in 2008, I often hung out on the coffee forums. Not only could I get ideas for new coffee brews and check the threads bringing in my customers faster. I wanted to find the ultimate ‘show-stopper’ that could easily make coffee but was actually great coffee too. That’s when I stumbled across this one thread about the Aerobie coffee maker.

It was a little bit like the French Press but was straightforward and less graceful than the French Press. But there was a huge buzz on how simple it was to use. It’s nearly like the pour-over method, which was all the rage at every other coffee and tea house. I didn’t want macrobiotic lactose intolerant cry babies in my coffee shop, so I needed to bring in the big guns! This is where Aerobie became my new best friend. Honestly, it has only a couple of key features to it.

Aeropress coffee maker parts

There is the plunger tube that holds your fresh coffee grounds, water, filter caps, and then the plunger. You can bring it anywhere, making it faster to bring my kit tray to a customer’s table. It has basically two separate filters. One is a stainless steel filter cap and a Microfilter that fits onto the filter cap. It also now has a funnel for pouring in your coffee grounds easier, a coffee scoop, and a stir stick. My original kit only had the stir stick and the Aeropress unit.

The new kit has Microfilters and a filter holder, which I think is useless since moisture is terrible for filters. I always keep my filters in a Ziplock bag with those Silica Gel dry-packets that keep dried food dry. It’s a pretty good deal all in all these days and what makes it stand out is how you put it right over a coffee cup. Unlike the pour-over method, this delivers a punch in the face of espresso-like coffee with less acidity. You can let it sit longer for more bite, but why? This method is meant for people on the go, and you can’t get that with a pour-over!

What’s the hype all about?

The downside to the Aeropress is that it has reached a cult-like following. I don’t blame Alan Alder a single bit, considering he also invented the Aerobie. Remember that flying disc with a rubberized edge on it that outsold the Frisbee? Yea, if you were a teenager watching Miami Vice or Baywatch, you definitely saw this modern Frisbee. Anyway, Alan always has a knack for being like P.T. Barnum and held public spectacles to show off the Aerobie. He did it all over again with the Aeropress that same year I discovered it.

He held the Aeropress World Championships, and it hit the big time with the online community. The Coffee Geeks all went wild, and the Aeropress thread spread into several threads dedicated to questions about his product. It helped his revenue sales increase online by 38% because of this publicity stunt and online persona. Like a real showman, Mr. Alder expanded these championships because catching on in the forum like wildfire. Most of the time, people were thrilled to be able to talk to this guy.

OK, hands down, this is simply coffee that is perfect every time. It’s great for camping, on-the-road trips, and a quick cup of coffee in the morning. I like it because I can grind my beans to the setting I like with the beans I like most. But that’s where the World Championships Cult-stars turned it into the new pour-over substitute. I’m not angry that it became a huge success, but it just soured my pitch at the coffee shop. My idea was to bring out the ultimate cup of coffee that was faster than my oversize La Cimbali espresso machine.

After that year, every corner coffee shop was cloning the idea and making it into their version. Well, truth be told, I couldn’t be bitter about the meteoric rise of Aeropress, and neither was my morning coffee. The Aeropress coffee maker is one of the few do-it-yourself coffee makers that you don’t need special training to master.

Pros

  • It comes in a full kit and costs under 30 bucks.
  • You can add on special filters of your choice if you want to go artsy.
  • You can make your coffee stronger the longer you let it steep inside the injection tube.
  • This is an excellent way to make quick coffee if you are going to make nitro brewed coffee.
  • It’s easy to clean, and the coffee grounds are perfect for composting, even the filter too.
  • It has less acidity (or bite) than traditional espresso making it smoother with fuller flavor

Cons

  • They need to upgrade the plastic tube due to micro-cracks from hot/cold expansion
  • It doesn’t come with a mug, so you’ll have to supply that yourself
  • Pushing down on the plunger can be harder the finer your coffee grind happens to be
  • I wish they still sold it for the 20 dollar sales price at Target back in 2008…

Conclusion

Well, all-in-all, I can’t complain about the Aeropress since it’s one of the best cups of coffee I’ve ever made. Actually, that’s Alan Alder’s motto, and he’s right- he did make it! For a guy who reinvented the wheel, he sure made a huge difference in how we look at brewing coffee. I’ve never been so impressed with the simplicity and ease of having an instant cup of coffee. The sheer point that makes this so attractive to me is that I can take it anywhere.

Camping trips have never been better when bringing my Aeropress along for the trip. It’s pretty neat showing friends and family how a make a cup of gourmet coffee in the middle of nowhere. If you’re a starving student, this coffee maker kit is an absolute must!
