Traditional Vietnamese slow-drip coffee with rich, bold flavors

Vietnamese Phin coffee embodies the unhurried pace of Vietnamese coffee culture. This traditional metal filter brewing method produces a strong, concentrated coffee that's typically paired with sweetened condensed milk, creating the beloved cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee) or cà phê sữa nóng (hot coffee).
The Phin's slow drip extraction process creates a rich, bold coffee with a heavy body and low acidity. This method celebrates patience and mindfulness, encouraging you to slow down and savor both the brewing process and the resulting cup of deeply flavorful coffee.
Place 1-2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk in the bottom of your cup if desired. This creates the traditional Vietnamese coffee base.
Place the phin filter on top of your cup. Add coarsely ground coffee to the filter chamber and gently shake to level the grounds.
Place the gravity press on top of the coffee grounds and gently press down. The compression should be firm but not too tight to allow proper water flow.
Pour a small amount of hot water (about 30ml) to bloom the coffee. Wait 30 seconds for the grounds to expand and release initial flavors.
Fill the phin with remaining hot water and cover with the lid. Coffee will slowly drip through - this should take 4-5 minutes. Stir to combine with condensed milk and enjoy.
