How Has Covid-19 Changed Office Coffee Consumption?

Who would have thought the whole world would have to go into lockdown? And yet, we have already spent one entire year in-home quarantine. Many countries are slowly opening up, but it will take more time until things normalize.

2020 was a challenging year for all of us. But it was particularly the hardest for businesses. Millions of employees have lost their jobs. Many have gone bankrupt. As soon as the lockdown orders came in, most governments made businesses shut down their stores which they deemed unessential. They also rolled out strict social distancing regulations.

But as we are one year into the Covid lockdown, vaccines will soon be made available to the public. Some businesses have started opening up their offices. However, they have implemented strict health and safety guidelines.

How Has Covid-19 Affected The Workplace?

The Covid pandemic has taught us one thing; dangerous viruses can infect us by getting into our bodies via our nose, eyes, as well as our mouths. This has helped many of us change our day-to-day habits, for example, how we greet each other at the office and how we consume coffee at the office.

According to a recent report, 80% of US workers felt unsafe to return to work. However, they had to return to the office anyway because they felt a strong responsibility towards their customers.

To minimize the doubts from the minds of the employees, many companies have taken some serious safety concerns that also cover how you consume coffee in the workplace.

The World Health Organization recently rolled out a report that suggests that companies who are opening up their offices must ensure there are hand sanitizers on every floor of the office. It also stipulates that offices disinfect their furniture surfaces daily and make it compulsory to wear a mask. Along with the above measures, the report also suggests that all offices must be well ventilated.

Many offices had introduced shifts to their workforce. This way, they have divided their entire workforce into multiple shifts and assigned different time slots to them. This way, it is possible to ensure that every office floor accommodates only that number of employees it has space for when complying with all necessary social distancing rules.

There is one more reason why workplace coffee consumption has decreased drastically. The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has laid down strong regulations for high-touch communal items in the office. These are items that serve a common purpose, and almost all the employees have use for it.

For instance, coffee mugs, dishware, different stationery items, and many more. The CDC strongly recommends that these items be replaced with alternatives that are single-serve.

Brewing Coffee in The Office

So how has the Covid lockdown affected Workplace Coffee consumption? Well, you might be surprised to learn that coffee consumption has not decreased at all. Home coffee consumption has been reported to increase by 4.9% in the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

Moreover, if you live in the USA, your nearby coffee shops might be running out of coffee beans soon. This is because coffee is only suited for certain climates and soil types.  As the global trade has halted due to the pandemic, coffee exports have dropped as well.

However, despite such limitations, coffee consumption has remained almost steady. This is because people are not drinking coffee at their workplace anymore. Due to concerns over the spread of the virus when sharing the same coffee mug, many office workers have turned their homes into home coffee bars

According to some online reports that oversee consumers’ online purchasing behavior over time, it has been reported that the sales of home coffee brewing equipment have increased by 11% in 2020 alone.

At the same time, it has been reported that the sales of wholesale coffee to the workplace have decreased drastically.

Thanks to the recent technological advancements, it has become easier than ever to brew specialty coffee at home. As people are still afraid to hang out at their favorite coffee shops, the ability to brew delicious specialty coffee at home has attracted much attention.

Moreover, suppose anyone was so willing to visit a coffee shop. In that case, they will be subject to social distancing rules, limited opening times, and other safety measures that every restaurant, bar, and coffee shop has to comply with. There is a high chance that customers will not get a seat at their neighborhood coffee shop as the safety rules require the shops to curb their seating capacity.

To avoid such situations altogether, many people have picked up coffee brewing as a hobby.

The Conclusion

As mentioned earlier, things will take time to get back to normal. There isn’t a high possibility that coffee shops will be permitted to operate like they did before the lockdown started. Moreover, even after the vaccines are rolled out on a massive scale, we will still have to wait a couple more months until the virus’s mortality rate drops significantly.
