After using the Hamilton Beach Scoop Coffee Maker for around nine months, I think I’m finally ready to write an honest review of this coffee maker.
This review will give you the pros and cons of this machine that I discovered while using it during that time.
I bought the scoop coffee maker when, after three years of use, my Keurig died. While shopping around on Amazon for a new coffee maker, I had a few requirements; I knew I didn’t drink enough coffee to justify a coffee pot that made 12 cups at a time.
I wanted to find a single-serve coffee maker that I didn’t have to buy k-cups for constantly. While I know you can buy a refillable K-cup, it just seemed like a lot of work for something you have to do when your half asleep.
Finally, I didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a new coffee maker. After some searching, I came across the Hamilton Beach Scoop Coffee Maker.
What Is The Hamilton Beach Scoop Coffee Maker?
I had never seen a coffee maker like this before. That’s saying a lot as I run a website all about coffee!
It only costs around $50, so I thought I’d give it a try.
It was much less than any other single-serve coffee maker I had found.
As the name suggests, the scoop coffee maker is a stainless steel coffee maker that uses a scoop instead of a regular coffee filter to hold the coffee grounds.
I found I liked that you could add more or less coffee to the scoop to suit your strength preference.
It also doesn’t take up much space on my counter. It only measures around 10” wide and 8 ½ inches deep. A lot smaller than my old Keurig machine.
How to Use The Hamilton Beach Scoop Coffee Maker
Like I said before, using the scoop coffee machine is very easy. There are only a few simple steps, I have listed them below.
Step 1 – Fill the cup you want to drink coffee out of with water and pour it into the water reservoir on the back of the coffee maker.
Step 2 – lift on the front of the coffee maker and remove the scoop.
Step 3 – Add the amount of coffee you want to use to the scoop. I have a burr coffee grinder and will just remove the grind collection box from the bottom of the machine and put the scoop directly under where the coffee grounds come out, press the button and fill the scoop up.
Step 4 – Put the scoop back in the machine and press the regular or bold brew button.
Step 5 – Wait for the coffee to finish brewing and enjoy your cup of coffee.
Features Of The Hamilton Beach Scoop Coffee Maker
According to Hamilton Beach’s Website, these are the features it lists for the scoop coffee maker.
“Costs pennies per cup, compared to leading competitors’ single-size packs.”
While this is true if you buy cheap coffee, who wants to drink cheap coffee? While it is cheaper than buy a cup of coffee shop coffee. Spend the extra money and get a decent whole bean coffee.
“Proportions coffee exactly with single-serve scoop filter.”
Yes! I like that I don’t have to measure coffee in the morning; all I do is scoop the coffee and press a button… BAM! Coffee.
“Brews an 8 oz. cup of coffee in less than 90 seconds.”
I timed it, it takes around 114 seconds, but this is still pretty good.
“The built-in adjustable stand holds a standard-size cup and taller travel mugs.”
Yes, I use both size mugs, travel during the workweek, and a regular coffee cup during the weekend. It’s easy to flip the metal stand back and forth.
“One steel mesh scoop filter included; no need for paper filters.”
Not having to use a paper filter is one thing that sold me on this coffee maker.
A wide drip tray on base acts as a spill-resistant drain for excess coffee.
Yes, be sure to clean this about once a week, or more if you’re like me and can’t wait for the coffee to finish brewing.
Settings for REGULAR (automatic drip) and BOLD coffee
These buttons work as expected; what it does is slow the brewing process where standard takes 114 seconds to brew, Bold will take around 141 seconds to brew. The moral of the story if you’re running late, use standard; if you have time, use bold.
Durable, stainless steel features ensure the coffeemaker’s longevity
I’ve had mine for around nine months now, and it’s still working, so yes, I would say this is true.
It automatically shuts off after brewing.
Another feature I love, I don’t have to worry about my house burning down if I forget to turn the coffee pot off. It does it form me; a few seconds after the coffee finishes brewing, the machine cuts off.
FAQs About The Hamilton Beach Scoop Coffee Maker
The Coffee is Weak, How Do I Fix This?
I have read if you have a tamper, which can help with the coffee tasting weak.
When you put the grounds in the scoop, use a tamper to compact them a little.
Compressing the coffee with the tamper will allow the water to remain on the grounds longer and extract more flavor.
Water is coming out of the top of the machine and the coffee isn’t brewing
I didn’t discover this until I was making coffee one day, and it happened to me.
There are two filters, the scoop is the first, and there is a second one under the scoop.
It can get clogged if you use finely ground coffee. Remove the filter and wash it out.
How Do I Clean The Scoop coffee maker?
Start by disassembling all of the parts and wash them in warm soapy water.
You can use a special descaling liquid inside the machine or just brew a few cups of vinegar.
The only drawback to the vinegar is you have to brew a lot of water through the machine to remove the vinegar taste.
