The Luxe Brewer Thermal is Breville’s SCA-approved drip machine for people who want a programmable coffee maker with the controls of a manual pour-over underneath the hood. Bloom volume, bloom time, brew temperature and flow rate are all adjustable and savable as a custom profile, which is the feature that separates it from every drip machine at half its price.
A one-touch preset, or four variables you set yourself
The Luxe Brewer ships with a Golden Standard preset that follows the SCA’s Gold Cup guidelines and a dedicated Cold Brew mode, but the feature Breville built the machine around is Custom Brew: fine-tune bloom volume, bloom time, brew temperature and flow rate, then save the combination as your own profile. That is meaningfully more control than the fixed bloom-and-drip cycle most programmable machines run, and it is the difference between a machine that approximates pour-over technique and one that lets you actually set the variables a pour-over brewer would adjust by hand.
A built-in filter you will eventually have to replace
The 60 fl oz (12-cup) water tank has a ClaroSwiss water filter integrated into it, along with measuring lines for dialing in batch size. Built-in filtration is a genuine convenience — it protects the internal plumbing from scale and improves the water going into your coffee — but it is also a recurring cost and a maintenance task most basic drip machines simply do not have. Anyone buying this machine should plan on periodically sourcing and swapping ClaroSwiss cartridges, not treating the filter as a one-time install.
A thermal carafe, and a footprint to match
This is the thermal-carafe version of the Luxe Brewer, and Breville rates the dual-wall carafe to hold above 150°F (65°C) for up to four hours — a real advantage over a glass carafe sitting on a hotplate, since nothing is slowly cooking the coffee that is not currently being poured. The tradeoff shows up on the counter: the machine measures 16.1in wide by 10.2in deep by 6.8in tall, wider than most drip makers in its class, largely to house the reservoir, filtration and control electronics side by side. It also includes both cone and flat-bottom filter baskets in the box, and supports a delayed start programmed up to 24 hours ahead.
What you are actually paying for
At a retail price around $349.95, the Luxe Brewer Thermal sits well above typical programmable drip machines, and the premium is entirely the adjustability and the SCA-aligned brewing logic, not exotic materials or a larger carafe. If you never touch the Custom Brew settings and just run the Golden Standard preset every morning, you are paying for engineering you are not using; the machine earns its price only if you actually dial in bloom and flow rate for your beans.
Before you buy
- Measure your counter space against the 16.1in width before ordering — it is noticeably wider than a standard drip machine.
- Factor in the ongoing cost of ClaroSwiss replacement filters, not just the purchase price.
