Buy it if

  • Anyone who wants a bigger pot without a digital panel to set up.

Skip it if

  • No delayed start — it's an on/off switch and a two-hour warming plate.

The KRUPS Simply Brew is a 900-watt, 10-cup drip machine built around a single idea: no digital panel, no clock to set, just an on/off switch. Consumer Reports tested this exact model, and the results explain why “simple” and “good” turned out to be two different questions here.

One button really does mean one button

CR confirms there is no programmable timer, no brew-strength control, and no small-batch setting on this machine. You fill the reservoir, load a permanent cone filter, and flip the switch. For anyone who has fought with a coffee maker’s clock display after a power outage, that is a real selling point rather than a missing feature — but it also means the 10-cup pot you get in the morning is the only pot this machine knows how to make.

The brew temperature CR measured

CR’s test found the Simply Brew fell short of the 195°F-or-higher guideline held for five to six minutes that the Specialty Coffee Association considers necessary for full extraction. That puts it in the same category as the Shardor elsewhere in this lineup and the opposite category from KRUPS’s own SCA-certified Essential Brewer — the same brand sells one 10-cup machine that hits the mark and one that doesn’t, which is a useful reminder that a brand name alone tells you nothing about a specific model’s performance.

The carafe is genuinely good

Unlike the pricier KM911, CR’s testers rated this carafe highly — comfortable handle, no dripping while pouring, good balance full, and easy to empty. CR measured usable capacity at 51oz. The reservoir is not removable and the carafe is standard glass on a warming plate rather than thermal, so coffee continues cooking on the plate after brewing; the plate runs for two hours before shutting off, which is the closest thing this machine has to a safety net given there’s no delayed-start timer to plan around.

The tradeoff in plain terms

You are buying a machine that pours well and operates with zero learning curve, at the cost of a brew temperature that CR’s own testing found runs cooler than the industry guideline. If you drink your coffee black and care about extraction, that shortfall will show up in the cup. If you take milk and sugar, or just want a large pot with the least possible fuss, the tradeoff is easier to accept.

Before you buy

  • Don’t count on the 2-hour warming plate cutoff as a substitute for a delayed-start timer — there isn’t one, so someone still has to flip the switch each morning.
  • Don’t leave coffee on the warming plate long even before the 2-hour cutoff; a non-thermal carafe on an active hotplate keeps degrading the coffee’s taste.
  • If you want the same simplicity with a verified 195°F+ brew, compare it directly against KRUPS’s own Essential Brewer KM911.
  • Check current pricing against the KM911 — the temperature difference between these two same-brand machines is the whole decision.
