The Mini Brew is Mr. Coffee’s smallest switch-operated drip machine: a 5-cup, 25oz maker built around a single physical switch instead of a control panel. It is meant for a footprint problem, not a coffee-quality one, and independent testing shows exactly that tradeoff.
A switch, not a control panel
Mr. Coffee’s own listing keeps the feature set short: an ergonomic plastic carafe with cup markings, an easy-view water window, and a lift-and-clean filter basket compatible with Mr. Coffee’s reusable filter or water filtration disk, both sold separately. There is no programmable clock and no delay-brew setting. You fill it, flip the switch, and it brews — which is the entire point of a machine built for a dorm room or a desk rather than a kitchen counter.
What TechGearLab actually measured
TechGearLab tested this model and recorded an average brew temperature of 181.9°F, below the SCA-recommended 195–205°F range for full flavor extraction. Their notes describe the resulting coffee as light and acidic with a thin mouthfeel, and they measured inconsistent results across sequential pots. Brew time came in at 8.1 minutes for six cups, with the first pot taking 9 minutes. Power draw measured 650W. The machine scored 57 out of 100 overall, ranking 9th of 11 machines in that comparison, with taste at 6.3/10 and brew quality at 5.4/10 — not a failing result, but a clearly budget one.
The hot plate has no memory
TechGearLab also flagged that the machine doesn’t automatically turn off its hot plate, so a forgotten carafe stays on heat rather than shutting down on its own. They noted the sneak-a-cup pause function can leak onto that plate if you pull the carafe mid-brew. Neither is unusual at this price point, but they are the kind of small daily friction that a $25 machine trades for its low cost.
Where the compact size actually helps
Mr. Coffee sizes this machine for two 12oz cups per brew, and the case for it is entirely about the footprint: it is one of the smaller full-featured drip makers you can buy, which matters in a dorm room, a small office desk, or a kitchenette where counter space is the scarce resource, not coffee quality.
Before you buy
- Measure your counter space against the compact footprint before assuming it will fit — that’s the entire reason to choose this model over a larger one.
- Don’t expect SCA-standard brew temperature; TechGearLab measured this unit brewing well below the recommended range.
- Remember to switch the hot plate off manually when you’re done — it has no auto shut-off.
- Buy the reusable filter separately if you don’t want to keep a stock of paper filters for a 5-cup machine.
