Black+Decker’s CM2046S pairs a “VORTEX” showerhead and a thermal carafe with a genuinely good Consumer Reports lab result on brew temperature. It’s the temperature number that earns this machine its place on a shortlist, not the experience of pouring from it.
What Consumer Reports actually measured
CR’s lab found the CM2046S “met recommended guidelines of 195°F or more, maintained for five or six minutes,” the same standard applied across its drip coffee maker testing. That’s the harder number to fake and the one that determines whether the coffee is properly extracted, and this machine clears it — on par with machines costing considerably more.
The carafe is the part that lets it down
CR’s usability testing was specific and not flattering: “The carafe wasn’t especially easy to use, based on how comfortable we found its handle, whether it dripped while pouring, its overall balance when full, and how hard it was to empty.” That’s a thermal carafe, which is supposed to be the upgrade over glass, coming up short on the basic mechanics of using one. Extraction and handling are two different things, and this machine is a reminder that a good number in the lab doesn’t guarantee a good experience at the counter.
Vortex showerhead and Perfect Pour spout
Black+Decker’s own listing describes VORTEX Technology in the showerhead and a “Perfect Pour” spout, both intended to reduce mess and improve saturation. These are manufacturer claims rather than anything CR independently verified, so treat them as marketing language layered on top of the one figure that was actually tested.
Specs and what’s included
CR measured the reservoir at 63oz and notes the machine uses a cupcake-style filter basket rather than the more common cone shape, which matters when you’re restocking filters. It’s programmable, with auto-shutoff, a cleaning indicator, brew-strength control, and a keep-warm function alongside the drip-stop feature.
Before you buy
- Handle the carafe before committing, or check the return policy carefully — CR’s complaint is about ergonomics specifically, not brew quality.
- Confirm you can get cupcake-style replacement filters locally, since the basket doesn’t take standard cone filters.
- If dripless, easy pouring matters most to you, weigh CR’s carafe finding heavily; it’s a documented lab observation, not a single complaint.
- Check current warranty terms with the retailer.
