The Braun BrewSense KF7150 is a 12-cup programmable drip machine built around a gold-tone permanent filter paired with a charcoal water filter, so the ongoing cost of paper filters disappears entirely. Braun calls the brewing logic “PureFlavor technology,” aimed at controlling temperature and timing rather than just running water through the grounds as fast as possible.
Two filters doing two different jobs
The gold-tone mesh filter is the permanent part — it replaces a paper filter and, like any metal mesh filter, lets more of the coffee’s natural oils and some fine sediment through than paper would. The charcoal filter is a separate component that sits in the water reservoir and is meant to reduce chlorine taste and odor in tap water before it ever reaches the grounds. Together they’re Braun’s pitch for why you’d never buy a box of paper filters for this machine, and unlike a lot of “reusable filter” claims, the water filtration piece is a genuinely separate function rather than marketing dressed up as one feature.
A 1000-watt machine with real programmability
Braun’s specifications list a 1000W element, a removable water reservoir, a 24-hour programmable timer with an LED clock display, auto shutoff, and a 1–4 cup setting for smaller brews. There’s a “Calc” warning light that tells you when it’s time to descale, which matters more on a machine like this than on a cheaper switch-only model, since mineral buildup affects both the heating element and the brewing consistency PureFlavor is supposed to deliver.
What Consumer Reports could and couldn’t confirm
Consumer Reports lists the KF7150BK at $129.95 with a programmable timer, removable reservoir, keep-warm function, drip-stop, and a standard (non-thermal) glass carafe. Notably, CR’s own listing states it expects this model to perform similarly to the Braun BrewSense KF7000BK that it did lab-test, while cautioning it may differ in price and features — meaning the brew-temperature and taste results specific to the KF7150 itself are not independently confirmed, only inferred from a related model in the same line.
The carafe is still just glass on a plate
For all the filtration engineering, the carafe itself is conventional: glass, sitting on a warming plate with low/medium/high heat settings rather than a vacuum-insulated thermal pot. That gives you more control over how hot the plate runs than a fixed hotplate would, but the coffee is still reducing on an active heat source rather than being held at a stable temperature the way a thermal carafe would hold it.
Before you buy
- Rinse the gold-tone filter thoroughly before first use, and expect a bit more sediment in the cup than a paper-filtered machine would produce.
- Replace the charcoal water filter on Braun’s recommended schedule — it does not filter forever.
- Set the warming plate to its lowest heat setting if you tend to leave coffee sitting for a while.
- Treat Consumer Reports’ brew-quality expectations as inferred from a related Braun model, not as a direct test of the KF7150 itself.
