The BT Speed Brew’s whole design premise is that a drip machine should not have to heat water from cold every time you want coffee. Inside the case is a commercial-grade stainless steel tank holding 70oz of water that BUNN keeps hot around the clock, so brewing is just pushing already-hot water through the grounds instead of waiting for an element to warm up first.
Why it brews a pot in four minutes
Per BUNN’s own figures, the BT brews a full carafe in about 4 minutes and fills a 20oz travel mug in about 2, which is roughly half the time of a typical drip machine that has to heat its water on the fly. The 850W heating element (120V, 7 amps, per BUNN’s Speed Brew manual) is doing continuous, low-effort work maintaining the tank rather than one large burst of heating at brew time, which is the actual mechanism behind the speed — it is not a stronger pump or a different brewing method, just water that is already at temperature when you press the button.
A carafe built to be moved, not a hotplate to sit on
The included carafe is a 50oz, double-walled, vacuum-insulated thermal vessel, and BUNN rates it to hold serving temperature for 2 or more hours with no hotplate underneath it. That is a real advantage over glass-and-hotplate machines: nothing is slowly cooking the coffee that is not being poured yet. It also means the carafe can be pulled off the machine and carried around, which a machine with a fixed warming plate cannot offer.
The catch is the always-on tank
Speed is bought with a commitment: the internal tank needs to stay filled with water and the machine needs to stay plugged in and powered for the always-hot design to work at all. BUNN’s own manual instructs users to wait 15 minutes for the tank to heat on first power-up, and treats leaving the machine on as the normal state rather than the exception — it explicitly only recommends switching it off if it will sit unused for four or more days. If your habit is to unplug small appliances between uses, this is not that kind of machine, and running a 24-hour standby heater has an ongoing electricity cost that a machine you only power on to brew does not.
