BUNN’s Speed Brew line borrows an idea from its commercial machines: keep a tank of water always hot, so brewing doesn’t have to wait for a heating element to catch up from cold. The CSB2B is the entry point into that line, and the corner it cuts to hit its price is exactly where the “Elite” name stops meaning what it sounds like.
An internal tank does the work, not a heating coil
Inside the case is a stainless steel tank holding 70oz of water that BUNN keeps hot around the clock, rather than heating water fresh for each pot. That is why brewing is so fast: BUNN’s own figures put a full 50oz carafe at about four minutes and a 20oz travel mug at about two. A commercial-style multi-stream sprayhead spreads that hot water over the grounds instead of running it through a single stream, the same approach BUNN uses in its café equipment.
The carafe is where the savings show up
The CSB2B ships with a 10-cup glass carafe rather than the insulated thermal carafe BUNN sells on pricier Speed Brew models, and that glass carafe sits on a warming plate. The carafe itself has a drip-free pour, which reviewers note works as advertised. But a glass carafe on a plate only stays hot as long as the plate is switched on, and it keeps cooking the coffee the whole time — the flavor a fresh pot has at minute one is not the flavor it has at minute forty.
Two switches, no clock
Control is two physical switches: one powers the internal hot-water tank, the other powers the warming plate, with a blue light on the latter and no automatic shutoff. Nothing in BUNN’s documented feature set for this model describes a delay-brew clock or programmable start time — you turn it on and it brews. Because the tank is designed to stay hot continuously, it also draws standby power even when you are not brewing; BUNN includes a “vacation switch” specifically to cut that power when the machine will sit unused.
Where owners run into trouble
Beyond the always-on warming plate, reported issues include the indicator light failing prematurely on some units and occasional electrical faults, along with grounds overflowing the basket if you grind too fine for the fast flow rate. None of this is unusual for a machine built around speed rather than fine control, but it is worth knowing before you buy one expecting a “set it and forget it” appliance.
Before you buy
- Remember to switch off the warming plate yourself — there is no auto shutoff to do it for you.
- If a thermal carafe matters to you, look further up BUNN’s Speed Brew range; the Elite name doesn’t include one.
- Use the vacation switch (or unplug) when you’ll be away, since the internal tank draws power continuously to stay hot.
- Grind slightly coarser than you might on a slower machine to avoid overflow at this brew speed.
- Confirm current warranty terms with the retailer; BUNN states 3 years on Speed Brew models.
