Buy it if

  • Households wanting regular, bold or a dedicated 1–4 cup setting with 24-hour programming.

Skip it if

  • Glass carafe on a warming plate, so the pot keeps cooking after the brew finishes.

The Hamilton Beach 46299 is a 12-cup programmable drip machine built around a choice most budget coffee makers don’t offer: regular, bold, or a dedicated 1–4 cup setting, selected with a simple button rather than a separate small-batch mode you have to remember to switch back off. It sits squarely in Hamilton Beach’s entry-level lineup, with the tradeoffs that implies.

Three settings, one machine

According to Hamilton Beach’s own product page, the 46299 brews a full 12-cup pot in regular or bold strength, or switches to a 1–4 cup setting tuned for smaller batches rather than just running a partial brew through the same cycle. It’s programmable up to 24 hours in advance through what the company calls “Easy-Touch programming,” and includes an “Auto Pause & Pour” feature that lets you pull the carafe out mid-brew for an early cup without dripping onto the warming plate.

The glass-and-hotplate tradeoff

The carafe is borosilicate glass with measurement markings, dishwasher-safe, sitting on a nonstick warming plate. That’s the source of this machine’s published downside: once the pot is full, the plate keeps heating it. Coffee left on an active hotplate for even 20–30 minutes starts to taste noticeably different — more bitter, less bright — because it’s continuing to reduce and oxidize rather than just staying warm. A 2-hour automatic shutoff limits how long that can go on, but it doesn’t prevent the degradation that happens well before the two-hour mark.

The rest of the feature set is conventional

An easy-view water window lets you check the reservoir level without opening the lid, the brew basket lifts out for cleaning and is dishwasher-safe, and there’s cord storage built into the base. At 12.9in high, 9.5in wide and 11.4in deep, it’s sized for a standard counter rather than a tight under-cabinet spot.

Who this suits

If your household splits between a full pot on weekends and a smaller brew on weekdays, the dedicated 1–4 cup setting is the actual reason to pick this over a plainer machine at a similar price. If you tend to let coffee sit on the plate for an hour while you work, a thermal-carafe machine will serve the coffee itself better, even without the extra brew-strength options.

Before you buy

  • Plan to pour within 20–30 minutes of brewing if you care about taste; don’t rely on the 2-hour shutoff as a taste guarantee.
  • Measure your counter clearance against the 12.9in height if it’s going under a cabinet.
  • Confirm current warranty terms with the retailer before buying.
  • If you regularly let a pot sit for an hour or more, weigh a thermal-carafe model instead — this one is built around a hotplate.
