Buy it if

  • Budget buyers who want reusable filtration and a borosilicate carafe.

Skip it if

  • One-button operation — there is no delayed start.

The Mueller 12-cup drip coffee maker (model DC-550x) is a $50, one-button machine built around a stainless steel mesh permanent filter instead of paper. There’s no programmable timer and no digital panel — you fill the reservoir, load the basket, and press the single button.

What a steel mesh filter actually changes

Mueller’s own product page specifies a stainless steel mesh permanent filter as the machine’s central feature, paired with a 60oz borosilicate glass carafe. Metal mesh filters are a genuine category tradeoff, not a Mueller-specific claim: they let more of the coffee’s natural oils through than paper does, which produces a fuller-bodied cup, and they also let more fine sediment through, which means slightly more grit at the bottom of the pot. Whether that’s an upgrade or a downgrade depends on what you’re used to drinking — French press drinkers will find it familiar, paper-filter drinkers may notice the difference.

The specification sheet, as far as it goes

Mueller lists 950 watts, one-button operation, an automatic keep-warm plate, a drip-free pour design for mid-brew pouring, a water-level window, and BPA-free construction. It measures 9.25in by 6.9in by 12in and comes in six colors. That’s a reasonably complete spec sheet for a budget machine, but it comes entirely from the manufacturer — we found no independent lab test of this specific model from an outlet like Consumer Reports or TechGearLab, which several other machines in this lineup do have.

What that absence actually means

Without independent testing, there’s no verified brew temperature for this machine, and no measured comparison to the 195°F guideline the way there is for the Shardor, both KRUPS machines, or the Black+Decker elsewhere in this batch. Mueller’s marketing doesn’t make a temperature claim either way. That’s not evidence of a problem — it’s simply a gap; a lot of budget machines in this category never get tested by anyone, and this is one of them.

Who this makes sense for

If you want a fuller-bodied cup and don’t mind a bit of sediment, and you’re comfortable buying on manufacturer specs alone at this price, the borosilicate carafe and permanent filter are a reasonable combination. If you want a purchase backed by an independent measurement rather than a spec sheet, this is the one machine here where that measurement simply doesn’t exist yet.

Before you buy

  • Rinse the steel mesh filter well before first use, and expect more sediment in the cup than a paper-filtered machine.
  • Since there’s no delayed start, plan on someone pressing the button each morning.
  • Check the return window given that no independent lab has verified brew temperature or taste on this model.
  • If verified 195°F+ brewing matters to you, compare it against the KRUPS Essential Brewer in this lineup instead.

Based on Mueller’s manufacturer product page for the 12-Cup Drip Coffee Maker (DC-550x) and the retail listing for this model. No independent lab test of this specific model was located. CoffeeLogik has not tested this machine in person.

The rating shown on this page is an editorial research score, not a hands-on laboratory or personal-use test score.
