Secura’s 34oz French press swaps the usual glass carafe for double-walled 304-grade stainless steel, and ships with two spare screens in the box. The pitch is durability over delicacy: nothing here breaks if you drop it, at the cost of being able to see what’s inside.
Steel instead of glass, on purpose
The body is 18/10 stainless steel, a grade chosen for resistance to rust and corrosion, and the double wall is meant to slow heat loss compared to a single-wall glass press. At 34oz the carafe is rated for roughly a liter, though after accounting for grounds and plunger displacement, reviewers who measured it got closer to 24–26oz of actual coffee out — worth knowing if you’re planning servings for more than two people. The tradeoff for the steel body is that you can’t see the brew level or color while it steeps, which some buyers find disorienting after using glass presses.
Two spare screens, because you’ll likely need them
Secura includes two extra filter screens beyond the one installed, which is a tacit admission that French press screens wear or get lost over time. When the seal is intact, reviewers report clean extraction with no stray grounds reaching the cup — the filtration itself isn’t the problem.
Shipping and fit are where it goes wrong
The complaint that shows up repeatedly is that the plunger rod and screen assembly arrive knocked out of true by shipping, and that the lid doesn’t always sit flush on the rim. A misaligned rod makes the plunger bind or press unevenly rather than moving straight down, which defeats the point of a tight-sealing filter. Reviewers separately note that pressing the plunger takes more effort than a standard press, since the fit is snugger to begin with — a shipping-bent rod on top of that snug fit is a bad combination.
Before you buy
- Check the plunger rod for straightness the moment it arrives, before you use it for the first time.
- Confirm the lid seats flush on the rim; a loose lid is a known complaint on this model.
- Use a coarse, even grind — a snug-fitting plunger only gets harder to press with fine grounds.
- If you regularly serve more than two people, budget on the 24–26oz real yield rather than the 34oz label.
