The KBGV Select is Technivorm’s SCA-certified home brewer, the model that earned the Specialty Coffee Association’s Certified Home Brewer mark in 2023 for meeting the Golden Cup Standard. There is no digital display, no app and no clock on it. You fill the tank, flip a manual switch, and the machine does the rest at a fixed, tightly controlled temperature.
What the SCA mark is actually certifying
SCA certification means the KBGV Select was tested in a lab and shown to hit the Golden Cup Standard’s temperature and extraction targets consistently, not just once. Technivorm’s own figures put the brew water between 196°F and 205°F, with a 4-6 minute saturation time for a full 1.25L (40oz, 10-cup) pot. The machine has also been separately approved by the European Coffee Brewing Centre to brew a half carafe to their standard — per Technivorm, it is the only brewer with that specific approval. Two independent heating elements do the work: one brings water to temperature and pushes it over the grounds, the other keeps the glass carafe warm afterward without cooking the coffee already sitting in it.
No timer is the point, not an oversight
This is where the KBGV Select asks something of you that a $60 programmable machine does not: you have to be standing in the kitchen to start it. There is no delayed brew and no 24-hour programming, nothing to set the night before. What it does have is a 100-minute auto shut-off, so you are not choosing between convenience and safety, only between convenience and simplicity. A manual switch is one less thing to fail and one less menu to navigate before coffee. If your routine depends on waking up to a pot that already brewed itself, this machine will not give you that; it gives you a switch to press.
Built to survive a repair, not just a warranty claim
The KBGV Select carries a 5-year warranty backed by a lifetime repair service, and the machine is still built by hand in the Netherlands with a metal housing rather than an all-plastic shell. That combination is unusual in a category where most machines are designed to be replaced rather than opened up. The body plastics that do exist are specified BPA-, BPS-, BPF- and phthalate-free. At about 6 lbs and roughly 14in tall by 12.75in wide by 6.5in deep, it is a smaller footprint than the multi-carafe and thermal versions in Technivorm’s wider lineup, and its brew basket includes an automatic drip-stop so you can pull the carafe mid-cycle without a mess on the hotplate.
Before you buy
- Confirm you are buying the “Select” version with the automatic drip-stop basket, not an older KBG variant without it, if that feature matters to you.
- Measure the clearance above the machine — the reservoir fills from the top and needs headroom.
- Decide honestly whether the 100-minute auto shutoff and lack of delayed start fit your actual morning routine before paying a premium for certification you may not be positioned to benefit from.
- Ask the retailer how the 5-year warranty and lifetime repair program get activated — Technivorm typically handles this through registration rather than the point of sale.
